Mentoring

Who is this programme for?

The mentoring programme is designed for colleagues who want to start with implants, and for colleagues who are already involved with providing implants for their patients.

For those of you who are experienced with implants, you may wish to raise the bar and consolidate your experience. You may also wish to focus on optimising aesthetic outcome, time after time!

Why do I need a mentor?

You must be aware how exponentially the UK dental implant market is growing. Everyday, more and more patients are asking about implant solutions for themselves.

Many courses offered present implant dentistry as a complex and time intensive treatment option that should be referred.

Courses often overwhelm the practitioner with numerous treatment options ranging from single tooth replacements to full arch complex treat- ments, and present a myriad of components and instrumentation. By the time the first patient arrives much of the knowledge has been lost or you may feel confused.

With the recent GDC guidelines, “Training Standards in Implant Dentistry for General Dental Practitioners” any clinician wishing to provide implant treatment should undertake suitable implant training.

Not everyone is able to enrol in a university course and not every university course offers a comprehensive hands-on supervised clinical training.

Traditionally, general dental practitioners have not participated in implant surgery for many reasons, including:

  • Fear
  • Difficulty in case planning
  • Negative experiences with implant cases
  • Overwhelming number of components
  • Lack of sufficient education
  • Lack of support
