Oral and Maxillofacial surgery is the surgical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck. This includes surgical dentistry (impacted teeth, dental cysts, dental implants etc), injuries to the face, salivary gland problems, cancers of the head and neck, facial deformity, oral medicine, (ulcers, red/white patches, mouth cancer), facial pain and temporomandibular joint disorders.
A Maxillofacial Surgeon in the UK is qualified in both dentistry and medicine. They are required to have extensive training and must pass fellowship examinations of The Royal College of Surgeons in Dentistry, General Surgery and Maxillofacial surgery.
Maxillofacial surgeons also specialise in the complex reconstruction in the head and neck, which may require free tissue transfer (free flap surgery) from other parts of the body.
