Shakeel qualified in 1992, following which in 1995, he was awarded a Masters degree in Restorative Dentistry at the Queen's University of Belfast.  In 1997, he attained Fellowship to The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and finally, he undertook a hospital based accredited 5-year specialist training in Restorative Dentistry at the Newcastle Dental Hospital, which he completed in 2005. 

Shakeel has gained the highest restorative qualification in the United Kingdom in the form of the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Restorative Dentistry, which is awarded jointly by the English and the Scottish Royal Colleges of Surgeons.  He is registered with The General Dental Council (Registration No. 80237) as a specialist in Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics , Periodontics and Endodontics.

The 5-year specialist-training programme is unique to the United Kingdom and this training is mandatory for an appointment to a Consultants’ post.  In 2005, Shakeel was appointed as a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at The Royal London Dental Hospital, part of the Barts and The London NHS Trust.  He also is Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at Barts and The London, Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, where he is involved in training of future specialists and postgraduate students.  He has a special interest in Implant Dentistry and is the clinical lead for postgraduate implant training. He lectures both nationally and internationally on various aspects of restorative dentistry, in particular implant dentistry, gum surgery and tooth wear.

Shakeel accepts referrals for patients requiring complex and advanced restorative treatment including surgical placement and restoration with dental implants.  He emphasises on aesthetic dentistry and strongly believes that aesthetics are not just achievable with “brilliant white porcelain”, but by achieving a harmony between teeth, gums and the face.
