Shakeel is a Consultant and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at The Royal London Dental Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust. Shakeel specialises in treating patients requiring complex and advanced restorative treatment including surgical placement and restoration with dental implants.

He is the Chairman for the Advisory Board in Implant Dentistry for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology and a Diplomate of The British Society of Oral Implantology. He is also the current Chairman of the ITI UK & Ireland Section.

Shakeel was awarded a Masters degree in Restorative Dentistry at the Queen’s University of Belfast in 1995. In 1997, he attained Fellowship to The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and finally, he undertook a hospital based accredited 5-year specialist training in Restorative Dentistry at the Newcastle Dental Hospital, which he completed in 2005. He also completed a 4-year part-time research degree at Newcastle University for which he was awarded a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS).

Shakeel has gained the highest restorative qualification in the United Kingdom in the form of the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Restorative Dentistry, which is awarded jointly by the English and the Scottish Royal Colleges of Surgeons. He is registered with The General Dental Council as a Specialist in Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics , Periodontics and Endodontics.

The 5-year specialist-training programme is unique to the United Kingdom and this training is mandatory for an appointment to a Consultants’ post. In 2005, Shakeel was appointed as a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at The Royal London Dental Hospital, part of the Barts Health NHS Trust.

He also is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, where he is involved in training of future consultants, specialists and postgraduate students. He has a special interest in Implant Dentistry and is the Clinical Lead for postgraduate implant training. He lectures both nationally and internationally on various aspects of restorative dentistry, in particular implant dentistry, gum surgery and tooth wear.

A restorative specialist in the United Kingdom brings together the three mainstream specialties (prosthodontics, periodontics and endodontics) and provides an extensive and unparalleled experience in managing and treating dental disease in a holistic manner.

Shakeel treats patients requiring complex and advanced restorative treatment including surgical placement and restoration with dental implants. His areas of particular interest include aesthetic implant dentistry and management of complex restorative cases including functional and aesthetic rehabilitation of patients with hypodontia and toothwear.

Shakeel is active in clinical research and has secured various research grants. As principal investor in 2015, he was awarded £500,000 grant by the Medical Research Council of UK for developing a novel bone graft material for use in implant dentistry. He is also a co-investigator in a £2 million research grant awarded by the Wellcome Trust, for collaborative research between QMUL and BAE Systems.

Professor Ama Johal

Ama is a Reader & Consultant Orthodontist at Bart’s and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. He qualified in dentistry at Sheffield University in 1989 with honours and completed the Membership in Orthodontics (Royal College Surgeons England) and Masters Degree in Orthodontics at Bart’s and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, graduating with distinction in 1996 more recently he has completed a PhD in Orthodontics.

Both his clinical and research work has been rewarded with numerous National and International prizes from The British Orthodontic Society, European Orthodontic Society, British Dental Association, The Craniofacial Society of Great Britain, The General Dental Council, and The Society for the Study of Prosthetic Dentistry. He is an invited lecturer, both nationally and internationally, appearing as a guest speaker at numerous conferences and has published widely in International Journals.

Both his role as a Consultant Orthodontist and his additional training in children’s dentistry have equipped him with the skills to provide the very highest standards of patient care, in a reassuring manner. His specialist clinical interests include providing care for patients with missing teeth and the management of adult patients.

Ama has been actively involved in the training of Dentists and Orthodontists now for over 20 years.

He is one of only 5 practicing orthodontists in the UK to have gained full membership to the Angle Society of Europe; a group of Orthodontists dedicated to providing the highest standards of clinical care.
 


Dr Sarah Shah

Sarah is a Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry at The Royal London Dental Hospital.

She is an experienced paediatric dentist having solely treated children since 2004. She has undergone extensive paediatric specialist training in numerous NHS leading teaching hospitals in the UK and has a vast experience in treating complex dental problems in children. She completed her paediatric dental specialist training at the Edinburgh Dental Institute and the Royal London Dental Hospital. Having completed her specialist training she passed the Royal College of Surgeons of England Examination in 2007. She has also carried out research in paediatric dentistry and successfully completed a Master of Clinical Dentistry in Paediatric dentistry at the University of Edinburgh. Her consultant training was completed at The Royal London Dental Hospital in 2009. She currently works as a NHS Consultant for Barts NHS Health Trust.

Sarah has gained the highest Paediatric Dental qualification in the United Kingdom in the form of the Intercollegiate Speciality Fellowship examination in Paediatric Dentistry, which is awarded jointly by the English and the Scottish Royal College of Surgeons. She is registered with the General Dental Council as a Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry. Sarah is also a peer reviewer for the International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry.

Her experience as a specialist and a consultant is broad and includes the management of anxious children, dental anomalies, dental trauma, and medically compromised children. She also has extensive experience of treating children under general anaesthesia and sedation.

Although, Sarah is highly trained at treating complex problems in children, she also sees children who require routine dental treatment including preventative dentistry.

Amre is a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Hospital, UCL Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is a registered specialist in Restorative Dentistry, Endodontics and Prosthodontics.

He qualified with BDS in 1996 and in 2000 after completing a two years programme was awarded a Master of Clinical Dentistry (Endodontics) from the UCL Eastman Dental Institute, the largest centre for postgraduate dental education in Europe. In 2003 he attained the Membership of Faculty of Dental Surgery to both the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

He is an experienced restorative dentist and over the years worked in numerous NHS leading teaching hospitals in the UK including the Royal London Hospital, Dundee Dental Hospital, Liverpool Dental Hospital and Charles Clifford’s Dental Hospital in Sheffield.

In 2006 he commenced his higher specialist training in Restorative Dentistry at Newcastle Dental Hospital, which led to his success in the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Restorative Dentistry in 2011 and was awarded both the Certificates of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) and Fellowship in Restorative Dentistry.

Amre’s clinical interests include non-surgical and surgical endodontic therapy, prosthetic rehabilitation and replacement of missing teeth with implants, fixed and removable dental prostheses.

Kushal is a Consultant and Honorary Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Hospital and a Specialist in Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Endodontics and Restorative Dentistry.
He qualified as a dentist from the University of Bristol in 2005. He enhanced his skills and experience working in a broad range of clinical settings to include dental practices, Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, Restorative Dentistry and Paediatric dentistry, during which time he was awarded his Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery.

He was appointed as a Specialist Registrar and Honorary Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Hospital in 2009. He has a particularly keen interest in treatment planning of the failing dentition, managing complex restorative cases and in Implant Dentistry.

Since graduating, Kushal has won over 13 national and international awards for his commitment to dentistry. He is the Chair of the Young Practitioners Group for British Society of Prosthodontics (BSSPD) and has held various positions within National dental societies including the British Society of Periodontology (BSP), British Society of Prosthodontics (BSSPD) and Specialist Registrar in Restorative Dentistry Group (SRRDG).

He has organized various national and international study days and conferences, as well as being actively engaged in lecturing, teaching and research. He has published in over 20 peer-reviewed journals.

In his spare time, he has a passion for music, plays various musical instruments and enjoys travelling.
 


Dr Deborah Bomfim

Deborah is a Consultant and Honorary Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at UCLH Eastman Dental Hospital. She qualified with Honours from King’s College London Dental Institute at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals. She completed foundation training in practice and worked at 4 major London Teaching Hospitals, before moving to the Eastman for a Masters in Conservative Dentistry (awarded with Distinction) and a 5 year Specialist Training Programme in Restorative Dentistry.

Deborah is actively involved in training future specialists and has set up and run national and regional courses for dentists and dental care professionals, including for the British Society of Restorative Dentistry, which she is a council member.

Deborah specialises in treating patients who require complex restorative treatment including placement and restoration of dental implants, management of gum disease and restoration of the failing dentition.

Her clinical expertise is matched by her commitment to providing the highest quality health care with the utmost care and professionalism.
 

Dr AJ Ray-Chaudhuri

AJ graduated from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ University in 2003. He then worked as a general dentist for 2 years before becoming a hospital dentist to further his dental knowledge and experience. He worked as a Senior House Officer and went on to his diplomas of Membership at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

AJ concurrently read law at Cardiff University and completed his Masters degree with a dissertation in Clinical Negligence in Dentistry. He then embarked upon 5 years of formal Consultant training at King’s College and St George’s Hospitals in London where he obtained experience in providing complex root canal treatments, gum surgery, crowns, bridges, dentures and implants.

During his training he taught dentists and allied health professionals locally, regionally and nationally. AJ also published extensively in scientific journals on a variety of topics related to his speciality, he has also conducted research which has been published in an international journal. In addition to this, he was awarded an Honorary Lectureship at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and currently examines in teaching and is an Associate of the Higher Education Authority and was awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship.

AJ specialises in treating patients requiring complex and advanced Restorative treatment including, surgical placement and restoration with dental implants. He is registered with The General Dental Council (Registration No. 82588) as a specialist in Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Periodontics and Endodontics. AJ has recently been awarded his fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

 

Dr Lorna McCaul

Lorna has been a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry since 2002. She graduated with Commendation from the University of Glasgow in 1989. She underwent extensive postgraduate training and gained the Fellowship in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. She then embarked on a hospital-based, accredited 5-year specialist training in Restorative Dentistry at Glasgow Dental Hospital. During which she gained the Membership in Restorative Dentistry of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The 5-year specialist-training programme is unique to the United Kingdom and this training is mandatory for an appointment to an NHS Consultants’ post.

In 2001 she gained the highest Restorative qualification in the United Kingdom in the form of the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Restorative Dentistry. This is awarded jointly by the English and the Scottish Royal Colleges of Surgeons. She was awarded the highest mark of all candidates.

Lorna treats patients who have failing, missing, worn or unsightly teeth using a number of approaches tailored to the individual following consultation. She also has a specialist interest in management of the oral and dental side effects of surgery and radiotherapy for head and neck cancer.

She works closely with the Head and Neck Cancer multidisciplinary teams. She accepts referrals for treatment and treatment planning advice for patients requiring implant dentistry, tooth wear management, fixed and removable prosthodontics and restorative management of head and neck cancer. She also provides second opinions and carries out medico-legal work.

Lorna is author of the Restorative Dentistry chapters in the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Dentistry 5th and 6th editions and has co-authored several evidence-based Head and Neck Cancer guidelines. She has led the production of the first national Head and Neck Cancer evidence-based guideline focussing on oral rehabilitation.

She has presented nationally and internationally at several scientific meetings and has published numerous papers in refereed scientific journals.
She has extensive experience of teaching and training other dentists and their teams including more than fifty half-day and full- day hands-on courses. This has covered non-surgical and surgical endodontics, implantology, head and neck cancer, crown and bridgework and periodontology. She has been an invited speaker at numerous symposia. She has extensive experience teaching Restorative Specialty trainees in her role as an NHS Consultant. She was Yorkshire Regional Adviser for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow from 2012 to 2015 and is an examiner for the Dental Faculty.

Lorna sits on the council of RD-UK; the UK Association of Consultants and Specialists in Restorative Dentistry. She is Head and Neck Cancer lead for RD-UK. In this role she has worked with NHS England and Public Health England to improve Restorative Dentistry services for Head and Neck cancer patients. She is also Restorative dentistry lead for the steering committee for the new National Head and Neck Cancer Audit.

 

Professor James McCaul

Professor McCaul graduated in medicine with Honours and also in dentistry with Honours from the University of Glasgow. He completed undergraduate studies in 1997, winning 10 undergraduate prizes and medals. He completed basic surgical training gaining the FRCS Diploma in 1999 and entered higher training in the West of Scotland, also spending some training time in London and in Florida, USA.

He completed a PhD in Molecular Oncology (Telomere Function and Radio Sensitivity) at the CRUK Beatson Laboratories in Glasgow and won the West of Scotland Head and Neck prize, Scottish OMFS Society prize three times and the European Head and Neck Golden award during training.

He was appointed as Consultant Surgeon in Bradford Teaching Hospitals in West Yorkshire in 2006 and worked there for 8 years, developing clinical research in to head & neck cancers resulting in a team of 7 research staff and over 850 patients recruited to clinical studies.

He moved to work in the Royal Marsden Hospital in April 2014. Among 13 National and International Awards to date. He was awarded the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) President’s award for research optimising patient care in major surgery in 2012 and the BAOMS Surgery Prize in recognition of his international reputation and contribution in the Head & Neck field. His team won the BAOMS Norman Rowe Clinical Research Prize in 2014.

Since 2012 Professor McCaul is the National Research Lead for Maxillofacial/Head & Neck Research in the UK and Research Lead for BAOMS. He is Chief Investigator of the CRUK LIHNCS trial, which successfully recruited 419 patients to time and target, an international first for a mouth cancer surgical clinical trial. His research interests are in minimising impact and optimising outcomes from head & neck cancer surgery and also in effectively treating and curing after affects of treatment such as osteoradionecrosis (ORN). He is co-investigator in a further 8 clinical trials in the UK and collaborates internationally with colleagues in Europe and North America. These include analysis of new technologies for free flap monitoring and new pharmacologic treatments for ORN.

He was Associate Editor of British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for 3 years until 2014 and is part of the editorial board of this journal and reviews for 12 other international medical research journals. He is author of 5 book chapters and has presented and published more than 120 research abstracts at national and international meetings.

He sits on the Council and Endowments Committee of BAOMS and is a council member of the British Association of Head & Neck Oncologist and sits as Academic representative on the Specialist Advisory Committee in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

His clinical interests are in all pathology of the face, mouth, jaws, head and neck and salivary glands. His particular interest is in defining the precise extent of cancer and pre-cancer in patients with oral cavity and oro-pharynx tumours in order to accurately remove and treat cancer whilst minimising impact on oral and facial function, appearance and senses.

 

Dr Abdel Tawfik

Abdel is an experienced Oral Surgeon with a sound academic background.

He is a King’s Graduate and undertook a PhD on the Prediction of Oral Cancer at the Eastman Dental Institute, University of London. His research was published and presented at national and international scientific conferences.

He works as a Consultant in Royal South Hants, University Hospital Southampton: and previously (2002-2007) at Edgware Community Hospital. He also teaches Oral Surgery at both Guy’s and King’s College Hospitals.

Abdel has a Diploma in Conscious Sedation and therefore is very experienced in dealing with anxious dental patients and can offer procedures under intravenous sedation.

He actively contributes to the training of junior dentists and runs Oral Surgery courses in the UK and abroad. Abdel is a dynamic member of King’s College multidisciplinary team for management of facial pain, and regularly lectures about this subject at international meetings.

Abdel has a special interest in surgical removal of wisdom teeth and jaw cysts, pre-prosthetic & cosmetic surgeries of the jaw and management of facial pain.

Abdel has also a sound experience in dental implant surgery, bone augmentation and in managing a variety of oral surgery conditions under intravenous sedation.

Samy is a Consultant Oral Surgeon at the Royal South Hants Hospital in Southampton and a Specialist Clinical Teacher in Periodontology at King’s College London at Guy’s Hospital. His areas of clinical expertise are all forms of intra-oral surgery including the removal of impacted wisdom teeth, removal of benign lesions in the mouth, dental implants and the treatment of gum diseases.

Samy qualified from Guy’s Hospital in 1997 and followed onto pursue his postgraduate career leading to Diploma in Dental Sedation, Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons. MSc with research into dental implants. MClin Dent in Periodontology and Masters in Restorative Dentist of the Royal College of Surgeons.

He has worked for many years in both the Periodontology and the Oral Surgery Departments and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate dentists. He was the Clinical Lead for Dental Implants for the Oral Surgery Department before leaving to take up his Consultant post in Southampton.

Samy’s academic and clinical experience and training has equipped him to treat patients needing oral surgery and gum disease management, particularly those who are nervous or anxious.

Dr Kamran Ahmad

Kamran is a Consultant Anaesthetist at the Barts and The London NHS Trust.

He qualified from Nottingham University Medical School in 1990. He gained excellent training in Anaesthesia in Nottingham and London and in 1997 became a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

After completing his training he spent two years in Seattle. Since 2002 he has been a Consultant Anaesthetist at Barts and The London Hospitals.

He has extensive experience of providing sedation for dental procedures.

Zoe has 20 years’ experience within the dental industry. After nursing for a couple of years, Zoe pursued a career in Practice Management. She qualified in 2001 with Advanced Award and Diploma in Dental Practice Management. Recently, in 2015 she successfully completed the Institute of Leadership and Management Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management.

Zoe has witnessed many changes in the dental industry and understands the importance of consistently delivering a high quality service to both patients and team members. She maintains her dental nursing registration with the General Dental Council and continues to keep up-to-date with both clinical and non-clinical skills.

She was invited to write an article regarding her duties as a Practice Manager for the Dental Practice Managers’ Association in 2010 in their publication ‘Practice Focus’.

Since qualifying in 2006, she has gained further qualifications in both implant and sedation nursing. She has also since successfully completed her radiography qualification in 2016.

Her role within the practice is varied, using a wide range of skills to the benefit both patients and the team. This ensures that the quality of service delivered is always of the best quality for our patients’ care. For this reason, she also holds the position of Treatment Plan Co-Ordinator for patients with any questions relating to their treatment; Stacy is on-hand to assist.


Anna Sarisvili

Anna has been in Dentistry for almost 9 years. She started as a dental nurse and receptionist and moved on to being a practice manager. She helped the practice she was managing pass it’s CQC inspection.

Since then Anna has qualified from Queen Mary University of London – Barts and the London School of Medicine & Dentistry in 2014 as a Dental Hygienist and Dental Therapist. She was awarded a British Society of Dental Hygienists and Therapists “The most supportive student” award and “Communication prize”.

Anna is dedicated to providing a high standard of patient care while maintaining a relaxing and friendly atmosphere in the surgery.

She is very keen on updating her professional knowledge through reading dental publications and attending clinical lectures and courses.
